Missouri food prices below national average
The cost of 16 basic food items in Missouri fell back in the first quarter of this year, according to the Missouri Farm Bureau. Not only were the average prices lower than the previous quarter they were below the national average for those items.
Diane Olsen, MFB director of promotion and education, says the average price for Missouri shoppers January through March was $46.87 compared to $52.01 in the fourth quarter of 2011.
However, the average cost was $2.25 higher than the first quarter of 2011.
Nationally, those 16 grocery items – from ground chuck to eggs to apples and cheese – cost $52.47, a $5.60 savings for Missouri shoppers.
Olsen says, even though prices have fluctuated over the past few years – which has a lot to do with energy costs – consumers “continue to enjoy a variety of food choices that meet our nutritional needs thanks to our farmers.”
