Weed management still critical
Corn planting isn’t the only thing getting delayed this spring; weed management has also been a challenge. Even with the condensed growing season, Brittany Loewen corn herbicide product manager with Dow AgroSciences says it’s important for growers to stick to their weed management plan. “Continue the use of a residual herbicide,” she says. “I know a lot of times when the season gets condensed as it is it is easy to want to take shortcuts or try to maximize your time. While that is important – I think it’s crucial to remember the value of a residual.”
Loewen tells Brownfield even though it is getting late – burn down is still important. “Getting a good start to weed control is critical to having a good crop at the end of the season,” she says. “Getting in there with a good foundation herbicide is critical to achieve the yield that you want.”
With the time crunch this spring, she says to look for herbicides that have flexibility so you are able to adapt to whatever Mother Nature throws at you.
