A good year for tomatoes

It has been a good growing season for the state’s corn and soybean crops – but Steve Smith, director of agriculture for Red Gold says it’s been good for tomatoes, too.  “We’re expecting some very good yields – except for certain areas that got excessive rains,” he says.  “Particularly northwest Indiana took a pretty big hit in June, but the rest of the state looks like it’ll be an excellent crop.”

Indiana is the nation’s second largest tomato producing state.  Smith tells Brownfield part of the reason is because of the growers.  “They are excellent people,” he says.  “Most of our growers could be third and fourth generation.  We’ve got a great level of expertise and people who really care about what they’re doing and have the experience to do it right.  And then our total environment is very conducive to a very flavorful tomato.”

Tomatoes for Red Gold are produced in three states.  Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan.
