UAVs: The future of crop scouting
Technology that farmers use to scout their fields has come a long way. Aaron Scheller, owner of Indiana based Precision Drone says prior to today’s technology, the last major technological advancement farmers had for crop scouting – was the work boot. “In reality – you get out in the field and you walk it and try to figure out what the problem is,” he says.
Scheller tells Brownfield by utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones), farmers are scouting fields more efficiently. “What this allows us to do is single out the area that is most stressed,” he says. “We can tell how big it is, how intense it is and then we can go out and directly diagnose the problem. Rather than walking to a 200 acre field – I walk to a 5 acre problem. I can then take that map, export it into farm management software and write a prescription off of it.”
He says the technology can be used by growers of all different commodities, but anticipates specialty markets implementing its use first, because they can easily see their return on investment.
