New weed control tools from BASF

Surtain corn herbicide from BASF is commercially available to growers in the United States in 2025. Josh Putman, Technical Marketing Manager for U.S. Corn Herbicides told Brownfield that weed resistance continues to spread and farmers have fewer tools to control weeds than they did twenty or thirty years ago. Surtain herbicide, according to Putman, opens a new opportunity for controlling herbicide resistance into the future.

The supply for 2025 is sold out, but Putman said they will soon be taking orders for the 2026 growing season.

In October, BASF received EPA registration for Liberty Ultra herbicide, which Putman says is the next generation of glufosinate. Compared to standard Liberty herbicide, soybean, corn, cotton and canola growers will be able to use less product to achieve similar results as previous generations of Liberty.

Putman tells Brownfield, who caught up with him at 2025 Commodity Classic, that BASF offers a diverse cropping portfolio for controlling both above and below ground pests.
