Ava Kaenel – Montello, WI

Ava Kaenel was nominated as a Beck’s Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court and field. The thing she loves most about high school sports is simply the friendships and experiences she has gained. The team dynamics are also something she loves about sports because they can come from any background or grade level and still come together and work hard for the love of the same sport. This year she has also worked with her officer team to cook a meal for the families at the Ronald McDonald House in Madison. Although she does not come from an agricultural background, Ava has gained all her agricultural experience through FFA. She has plenty of respect for agriculture, hard work, and dedication throughout the industry. Without exposure to ag classes, Ava would not have become the greenhouse manager at her school. Although undecided, Ava is leaning towards attending Milwaukee Area Technical College and taking part in the radiology program in hopes of becoming an MRI technician after graduating high school.

Coleman Becker – Auburndale, WI

Coleman Becker was nominated as a Beck’s Player with Heart for his commitment and passion on and off the field and mat. The thing he loves most about wrestling is how the team is a big family. He has been wrestling with the same teammates since they were little tykes and they are some of the closest people to him. Coleman’s favorite part about football is how different sports and athletes intermingle. He finds it interesting how all athletes fit in their positions. Outside of sports, he is the FFA president where he, alongside his team, has organized huge fundraisers and trips for his FFA members. Coleman manages to find a way to balance school, sports, and farm work throughout the year. There were days when he would finish a job and go to practice in his tractor and baler. Then after practice, he would hop back in the tractor and head to the next job. Coleman’s position as an FFA officer has allowed him to be involved with his community. He has been a part of various events and fundraisers that benefit both his FFA chapter and the community. Agriculture to Coleman is one big community that relies on each other. When disaster strikes farmers, it is the other farmers that help them get back on their feet. This was demonstrated a few years ago when levies broke in northern Nebraska leaving farmers devastated. A group of farmers and agricultural enthusiasts, including his father and him, went into action by organizing a convoy to deliver supplies to these farmers. In the future, Coleman would like to start milking in his grandpa’s barn just down the road. That would make him a fourth-generation dairy farmer on the same road and land used by his great-grandpa. He would also like to take some agriculture courses through Midstate Technical College while he starts milking.

Colton Hagner – Fond du lac, WI

Colton Hagner was nominated as a Beck’s Player with Heart for his commitment and passion on and off the field and mat. What he loves most about high school sports is the camaraderie of playing football with his best friends, the individualism of wrestling alone on the mat, and the feeling, fun, and celebration of hitting one over the fence. He loves that sports allow him to compete and grow as a person, and to push himself to levels that he never thought he could reach. High school sports have allowed him to work with some amazing coaches. They have taught him that a positive attitude is a choice he has to make, and that attitude is contagious. He has also learned that handling adversity, respecting the game, and believing in himself are all key elements in sports. Colton competes in football, wrestling, and baseball and has served as his team captain for wrestling. When not playing sports, Colton’s favorite extracurricular school activity is being a fan. He enjoys going to as many athletic events and supporting his classmates as they succeed. He was also on the class commission during his junior and senior years where he helped make decisions for his class, including things like planning and decorating for Junior Prom and graduation. Most of Colton’s community activities revolve around sports and helping the youth. He enjoys volunteering at football and baseball camps. He has been a youth wrestling coach since he was a freshman. He was fortunate as a youth to look up to great role models, so giving back to his community is very important to him. He has also volunteered to help his father clean up a section of STH 26 as part of the Adopt-a-Highway program. This has allowed him to help the environment and he hopes to continue this action going into college. As a grandson of a veteran and being born into a patriotic family, he is honored to continue to show his support to the country and those who have served in the military. Colton helps his grandfather place wreaths on veterans’ graves throughout Washington County when he can. He also helps his father put up and take down American flags in their town on the power poles for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends. Growing up in a rural community, agriculture is all around Colton. Though he did not grow up on a farm, his grandfather did, and he has worked in the summers baling hay and tasseling/pollinating corn for local neighboring farms. Whether it is crops, dairy, or animal production, it is not lost on him that midwestern farmers are the ones that are feeding America. After he graduates high school, Colton’s plans include attending the University of Oshkosh to obtain a degree in business and finance and pursue his MBA. He is interested in the business and finance side of agriculture operations, and also in farm and rural properties acquisition/financing. He is excited to play baseball at the college level as a catcher/utility player. Being able to stay close to home will allow him the opportunity to watch his little brother grow up and play sports which was one of the biggest reasons he decided to go to college close to home.

Samuel Majeske – Balsam Lake, WI

Samuel Majeske was nominated as a Beck’s Player with Heart for his commitment and passion on and off the field and court. What he loves most about high school sports is being a part of a team, working together, and supporting one another through not only the season but also through life’s ups and downs. He obtained the honor of serving as team captain for his baseball team last season and for his basketball team this season. It is extremely important to him that he leads by example, displaying hard work and perseverance as well as respect. This past fall, he took a hit after making a tackle and ended up in the hospital for five days with a grade four kidney laceration and a lumbar fracture. The support he received from his teammates and coaches helped get him through the six weeks of recovery. Samuel is a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball. He participates in choir, has been a percussionist in band, and was part of the State FFA Choir. He is an active participant in FFA, serving as president for the past three years. Samuel has been involved in many activities to help his community since a young age. He has been part of the Kinship School-Based mentorship program, where he meets with younger students every week and does fun activities together. He is also very active in his church. He has been playing drums for the worship team a few Sundays each month since 8th grade. He volunteered at his Vacation Bible School program for the past six summers. As part of football, the high school players assist with the youth flag football program. This was something he enjoyed and helped run flag football each Saturday for the elementary school kids. Growing up on a family farm, agriculture is a large part of Samuel’s life. His father is the fourth-generation owner of their family farm, teaching him what hard work and dedication can build. Working side by side with his father has given him many opportunities to learn a variety of skills. This strong work ethic ingrained in him will serve him well in college and his future career. Samuel has enjoyed the opportunity to share agriculture and expand his experience through FFA. One of his favorite projects was when he drove his tractor to school, which raised awareness for sharing the roads safely with farm equipment during the busy harvest season. After high school, Samuel plans to attend a four-year college to major in business. He plans to pursue his dream to continue playing basketball at a D3 school. It’s important to him to recognize those who have supported him to get where he is today. His faith in God is his foundation and keeps him grounded. His family, especially his parents, also walk in faith and support his dreams, offering guidance as well as giving him enough room to learn from his mistakes.

These experiences have shown him the importance of hard work, problem-solving, and building relationships in agriculture. His community service experience has made a big impact on life skills, but it has also shown him the importance of being a role model for younger members. Over the past four years, Ashton has built and grown his business, Seed Clean, where he purchases, cleans, and resells bulk seed for cover crops.
