Behind the Scenes
Iowa Turkey Federation believes in doing things right
Sheila Larson with the Iowa Turkey Federation joined the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers “Doing It Right” Farm Tour for our stop at Tim and Lisa Graber’s farm near Wayland, Iowa.Sheila told me that the farm families in Iowa raising turkeys are committed to doing what’s right for their turkeys and their neighbors, from keeping the birds healthy to stockpiling manure in an environmentally friendly fashion. One of the keys in maintaining good relationships with neighbors is simply talking to them, to let them know what the farmers are doing.
The Iowa Turkey Federation exists to support, educate and promote turkey in the state of Iowa. There are 105 turkey growers in the state and 13 million turkeys are processed in the state, which has a huge economic impact. Most of the turkey in Iowa is further processed. If you are eating a Subway turkey sandwich, Sheila explains that you are eating Iowa turkey. If you eat a turkey sandwich at Jimmy John’s, there’s a good chance it is Iowa turkey as well.
The Iowa Turkey Federation has been a member of the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers since November. Why? Sheila said it is because they saw the good things the CSIF has done for other farmers wanted turkey growers to have someone besides the ITF to turn to for help in doing things right.
Sheila’s husband is a third generation turkey farmer in Iowa and her young son is already showing interest in the business.
