Jill Makovec Named Inaugural “Rooted in Gratitude” Honoree for Contributions to Wisconsin Agriculture

The Food + Farm Exploration Center has named Jill Makovec of Dane and Grant/Iowa counties an inaugural Rooted in Gratitude Community Catalyst Honoree, recognizing her leadership, communication and service on behalf of Wisconsin agriculture and rural communities.

Makovec’s connection to agriculture began on her family’s Lazy M Acres farm near Muscoda. She has built a career as an agricultural communicator, advocate and ambassador, including serving as Wisconsin’s 60th Alice in Dairyland. Since 2008, she has been a National Account Executive for Brownfield Ag News, helping connect agricultural businesses and organizations with audiences across the country.

Her commitment to agriculture also includes serving on the Wisconsin Fairest of the Fairs Committee since 2006, mentoring students through the UW-Madison Association of Women in Agriculture and supporting young women pursuing careers in agriculture.

“I’m especially excited that the Food + Farm Exploration Center is using this year to highlight the International Year of the Woman Farmer,” said Jill Makovec. “It has been an honor to mentor and support young women pursuing careers in agriculture and agriculture-related fields, while also helping share the diversity, importance and value of Wisconsin’s signature industry with consumers and communities across the Badger State. I’m grateful to be recognized for work that means so much to me.”

The Community Catalyst recognition celebrates women who strengthen Wisconsin agriculture through leadership, advocacy, education and service. This year’s recognition is especially meaningful as it coincides with the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

The inaugural Rooted in Gratitude recognition ceremony and annual fundraiser will be held Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the Food + Farm Exploration Center in Plover. The event will celebrate Wisconsin agriculture and its leaders while supporting agricultural education through a farm-to-table dinner, recognition ceremony, auction and other activities. Proceeds will support the Food + Farm Exploration Center’s hands-on agricultural education programs.
