Do dates on foods indicate quality?

Expiration and “use by” dates on food are not an indicator of food quality says Dr. Ted Labuza is a food safety export with the University of Minnesota explains some of the misconceptions. He recommends consumers keep their foods refrigerated below 40 degrees and make sure you have a thermometer inside your fridge. He sets his for 34 degrees.  Labuza advocates a uniform system of dates on foods.
