Which foods to wash and which to not
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has good guidance on this: For fresh produce, wash it under cold running tap water to remove any dirt that may linger on it. As for eggs, they’re washed in commercial egg processing plants and don’t need to be washed again. As for raw meat and poultry– the food safety experts say – do NOT wash them. The main reason is that bacteria on raw poultry and meat can get splashed onto other surfaces in your kitchen and cause cross-contamination which can lead to food borne illness.
