What is lactose intolerance?
Lactose is the sugar found naturally in milk and many milk products. Our bodies have to produce enough “lactase”, an enzyme, to break down those sugars. If we don’t, discomfort and intestinal upset are the result. If we are truly lactose intolerant, should we avoid all milk products? The Midwest Dairy Council says if we cut out all milk products we’re going to miss the unique health benefits of dairy and dairy foods. In this Lactose Intolerance Awareness Month, they offer some tips to manage lactose intolerance in this Healthy Living program.
