When is Milk the Real Deal?

When is a milk-labeled beverage not actual milk? The National Milk Producers Federation says if is plant-based and not made from milk, it’s not actually milk. While the name is used for rice milk, soy milk, almond milk, Jennifer Dampf with the St. Louis Dairy Council says people may not know that those are not the “real deal.”  She says Real milk naturally contains key nutrients – calcium, protein and Vitamin D,  B vitamins, phosphorus and potassium – that substitute milks do not contain. Although substitutes may be supplemented, she says the nutrients in milk are better absorbed by the body.
