The stigma surrounding food insecurity programs
One in five children in the U.S. are food insecure. In 2022, one in six people relied on food assistance programs – which includes the use of food banks or charitable donations. Jonathan Toms with Smithfield Foods says there is a misconception from the general public.
Smithfield Foods has made significant contributions to address food insecurity in their local communities. One of those is a retired city bus that’s been turned into a mobile pay-what-you-can market where those in need can purchase non-perishable food items, fresh produce, and healthy proteins for a donation of any amount.
