Managing for Profit
Improving the bottom line with storage
Market watcher Matt Roberts says there’s a profit to be made on the large corn crop if the right infrastructure is in place, in other words, storage. There’s a lot of corn, for sure, but Roberts says the key is understanding how basis and carry work in the futures market. Roberts, formerly with Ohio State University, is the founder of the private consulting firm The Kernmantle Group. He says there’s a lot of corn globally and domestically – the most since 2001. About half that inventory is in China, but it’s not known what the quality is and how reliable the statistics are. Even if there is less, Roberts says the market, and exports, haven’t acted like it.
Roberts spoke to Brownfield at the South Dakota Farm Bureau Federation Centennial Convention in Sioux Falls.
