Wednesday midday cash livestock prices

Iowa/Minnesota barrows and gilts are down 1.42 at 49.35, the East is down 1.03 at 49.05, weighted average on a carcass basis. The Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady to weak from 45.00 to 49.00. Chain speed continues to accelerate with yesterday’s kill estimated at 422,000 head. Country hog receipts surged on Tuesday despite another round of lower bids by hog buyers.

Feedlot country remains untested. Market watchers continue to look for that first round of starter bids. Asking prices are around 84 to 85 in the South and 134 to 135 in the North. Slaughter cattle at Dunlap, Iowa trended .75 to 1.50 lower on Tuesday. There was good demand early in the sale, but demand was light in the late trade. The major packers were on the sidelines. Choice 2-4 slaughter steers traded from 80.25 to 84.50, and heifers from 78.75 to 83.25. Choice boxed beef is down 1.65 at 140.99, and select was .42 lower at 135.28 at midday.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Ozarks Regional Stockyards, West Plains, Missouri totaled 3900 head. Compared to last week steers under 700 pounds and heifers weighing less than 450 lbs were steady to 2.00 higher, heavier weights were steady to 3.00 lower. Supply was moderate and demand was good. 5 to 6 weight steers brought 102. 50 to 115.00 and 5 to 6 weight heifers traded at 92.00 to 105.00 per hundredweight.
