2024 Borlaug Dialogue addresses barriers to global food security

Food security leaders from around the world are gathering in Des Moines, Iowa this week addressing threats to the global food system.

Ambassador Terry Branstad, president of the World Food Prize Foundation, says the hunger crisis continues to expand. “Africa, obviously, is a country that still has considerable poverty and many people, as we heard this morning, that are still living without electricity.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the 2024 Borlaug International Dialogue, he said farmers have been adopting practices that can help improve food systems. “We’re doing a lot better job now of preventing soil erosion and using cover crops. The yields have really dramatically increased.”

Branstad says he’s optimistic about the future of food security despite a number of challenges. “With the conflicts in the world, with the issues of the climate, we have a lot to do. But I think by working together we can accomplish great things.”

The theme for this year’s Borlaug International Dialogue is Seeds of Opportunity: Bridging Generations and Cultivating Diplomacy.
