2024 broiler sets, placements stay ahead of 2023 pace

Broiler sets and placements continue to trend above year ago levels, pointing to higher production in 2024.

The USDA says 247.754 million broiler-type eggs entered incubators last week, up 162,000 from the week before that and 5% larger than a year ago, with average hatchability improving to just under 80%.

Placements of 193.091 million broiler-type chicks into meat production were down 454,000 on the week, but up 3% on the year, with those birds heading to market in mid-October to early November.

The USDA’s updated 2024 and 2025 broiler production estimates are out September 12th.

Arkansas: Sets: 25.541 million eggs, compared to 25.54 million the week before; Placements: 21.166 million head, compared to 21.55 million the previous week

Kentucky: Sets: 8.173 million eggs, compared to 8.171 million the week before; Placements: 6.059 million head, compared to 6.184 million the previous week

Missouri: Sets: 9.041 million eggs, compared to 8.908 million the week before; Placements: 5.186 million head, compared to 5.241 million the previous week

California/Tennessee/West Virginia: Sets: 15.569 million eggs, compared to 15.607 million the week before; Placements: 13.488 million head, compared to 13.909 million the previous week
