2025 crop fertility plans being examined
A field agronomist with Burrus Seed says high input prices and lower commodity prices have many growers closely examining their fertility plans in 2025.
Dana Harder, who’s based in Missouri, says a recent soil test is the first step.
“If your pH is starting to get on the low side, below 6, putting lime on may be more beneficial than dumping more fertilizer on there, especially when it comes to phosphorus.” He says, “Phosphorus prices are pretty elevated.”
He tells Brownfield maximizing nitrogen efficiency also impacts the bottom line.
“The Maximum Return to Nitrogen (MRTN) is a great resource.” He says, “It takes into effect the nitrogen price, and corn pricing, and it comes up with a recommended application rate. It helps you maximize your ROI when it comes to fertility.”
Harder says even at current fertilizer prices, if soil tests show low levels of phosphorus and potassium, following the suggested application recommendations are also likely to net a positive return.
