2025 Hard Red Winter Wheat Tour underway in Kansas

A wheat and forage specialist says the first day of this year’s hard red winter wheat tour didn’t bring many surprises.

Romulo Lollato is with Kansas State. “What we’ve seen so far has been a fairly variable crop as we left Manhattan and went north and west.  There was some good yield potential. We did some measurements anywhere from 50 to 80 bushels per acre.”

He tells Brownfield wheat streak mosaic virus is present. “It’s not severe, but every single field we were stopping at, it was right there.”

Lollato says crop conditions declined as his group traveled west. “Going through Republic County and then Jewel and Smith, the crop got progressively drier and (showing) more symptoms of drought stress. It started off with some bottom of the canopy yellowing and losing some leaves all the way to the more recent crops near Smith County really showing leaves that were almost rolling up.”

He says he expects drought stress to be the worst in the northwest part of the state.

Production estimates will be available once the tour is wrapped up Thursday.
