$27.5 million Food for Progress to Pakistan and Afghanistan
The United States will provide $27.5 million in international assistance underUSDA's Food for Progress Program for Pakistan and Afghanistan. Approximately 17,400 metric tons of U.S. vegetable oil will be purchased on the U.S. market and donated to the governments of the two countries. They will then sell the vegetable oil and use the money to implement agricultural andrural development projects.
Besides the Food for Progress commitment, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says USDA is looking at other ways to help build the agricultural sectors in the two countries including ways to improve food production, improve watershed management andirrigation methods, reduce post-harvest losses and develop trade corridors along the border between the countries.
The Food for Progress Program provides U.S. agricultural commodities to developing countries and emerging democracies committed to introducing and expandingfree enterprise in the agricultural sector.
