PTI research shows high yield management brings consistent profitability
The lead commercial agronomist with Precision Planting says managing for high yields is the best way to increase farm profitability.
Jason Webster says their research conducted at the PTI farm, outside of Pontiac, Illinois, has been consistent.
“My high yield corn and soybeans are in my top three every single year.” He says, “We’re moving the needle. We’re pushing yield, but we’re trying to be practical and not spend foolish money on these programs. We’re making two to $300.00 more on a per acre basis than our standard practices.”
He says another project incorporating cover crops and livestock into a high yield system has also proven profitable.
“We’ve got some strip cropping practices where we’re kind of changing the way we grow corn in a sunlight manner and then adding a short crop in with soybeans or cover crops, and also use it as a grazing ability.” He says, “That is definitely one that’s high on our profitability list.”
Webster says other practices like irrigation and fertigation have also shown to be consistently profitable.
