3 issues to monitor for pork producers in 2025

The senior vice president of producer and state engagement for the National Pork Board says many hog farmers are focusing on three key issues this year.

Dr. Brett Kaysen says swine health is at the top of the list. “These endemic diseases that we face continue to challenge the profitability and overall well-being of our people and herd health.”

He tells Brownfield labor is another concern. “Everybody I talk to if I ask them what keeps them up at night the answer is usually labor, labor, and labor. We’re trying to create that pipeline of folks to work in the feed mills, work on-farm, but also that group of talent we need is the next great allied industry leaders and scientists.”

Kaysen says there’s also a focus on domestic consumption. “Yes, exports are doing well, but how do we continue to make pork relevant with the younger generation to drive consumption of pork domestically?”

He says National Pork Board plans to connect with younger consumers through digital media platforms.
