50% of Ohio corn, 32% of soybeans planted

Corn and soybean planting picked up speed in Ohio last week.

According to the latest USDA crop progress report, 50 percent of corn in Ohio is planted, compared to 96 percent a year ago.

Thirty-two percent of soybeans are planted, compared to 89 percent a year ago.

Central Ohio Farmer Jon Miller says they were able to finish planting after a slow start to the season.

“We were a month behind where we would normally like to be, but we just have one field of soybeans we’re going to plant after we bale some rye for straw,” he says. “We were done with our normal planting about two weeks ago for both corn and soybeans.”  

He says conditions have been just right for emergence.

“Some of our really early corn struggled a little bit where it was too wet and cold for a couple of days but it’s good enough to not have to replant it,” he says. “In some of the later corn that we planted the emergence seems to be about 100 percent and our early soybeans look really good.”

Miller grows corn, soybeans, and wheat in Fairfield County.
