67% of Indiana corn, 42% of soybeans planted
Corn planting progressed significantly last week in Indiana.
According to the latest USDA crop progress report, corn in Indiana is 67 percent planted, compared 100 percent a year ago and the five-year average of 98 percent.
Soybeans are 42 percent planted, compared to 96 a year ago and the five-year average of 89 percent.
Central Indiana Farmer Jennifer Campbell says they are finally making planting progress after a slow start to the season.
“We were able to get in the field on May 17th, got 30 acres planted, and then were rained out,” she says. “We sat out for 10 days, were able to start again on the 27th, and have been working every day since then.”
She says they were able to finish planting most of their corn crop on June 5th and have about 140 acres to go on soybeans.
Campbell says the season hasn’t been without challenges. She says they will take prevented plant on some corn acres.
“We will be taking some prevented plant– less than 50 acres on corn,” she says. “There was just no way we were going to get to it at all.”
Campbell raises corn, soybeans, wheat, hogs, and cattle just south of Indianapolis.
