Farmer remains uncertain about China’s U.S. soybean buys
A soybean farmer from Ohio says it still remains unclear if China will meet its commitment to buy 12 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans by the end of February.
Scott Metzger, president of the American Soybean Association, tells Brownfield the purchase deadline pushes up against the Brazilian soybean harvest.
“Who knows where it will go from there? If they can buy commodities at the same price or less from South America, they can go there and get out of some of those obligations to the United States. It’s a lot of added stress.”
Total Farm Marketing Senior Market Advisor Naomi Blohm says China has returned to the U.S. market, but only for political reasons.
China has purchased at least 8 million tons of U.S. soybeans in the new crop marketing year.
