A 2025 Farm Bill means lost time
If a new farm bill isn’t completed this year, Jake Westlin with the National Association of Wheat Growers says it’s not likely Congress will address it quickly in 2025.
“There’s going to be a new president. That person would have the opportunity to appoint their leadership and that takes up time with the U.S. Senate. In addition, there’s a debt ceiling on the docket for the new Congress as well as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.”
And then, he says committees will change.
“There will be a new Democratic leader on the U.S. Senate Ag Committee. I don’t know what priorities that person might have or how they’ll want to put an imprint on what a farm bill looks like.”
NAWG was one of 300 ag groups that sent a letter to U.S. House and Senate leaders on Monday, asking them to pass a farm bill by the end of 2024.
