A decent winter wheat crop expected in SD

The executive director of the South Dakota Wheat Commission says winter wheat harvest continues to advance across the state. Last Monday, USDA said 9% of the crop had been harvested.

Jon Kleinjan tells Brownfield “I heard there was a lot of combines rolling near Fort Pierre. The protein content has been average to above average and farmers aren’t saying much about yield, which to me indicates yields must be good.”

He says in western South Dakota, the winter wheat looks good, too.

“I talked to a crop consultant in the area and he says harvest is just getting started. It’s a monster year, he said and there could be some triple digit yields near Wall, South Dakota. I guess the ratings we’ve seen from USDA all year that show good to excellent are holding up.”

He also says the expectation is for an above average spring wheat crop, even with the warm temperatures in the forecast.
