A focus on farmland preservation and property rights
The president of the Ohio Farm Bureau says there’s a fine line between farmland preservation and protecting property rights.
Bill Patterson says, “One would think they are the same thing, but they’re not.”
He says outlining the organization’s policy on the issue is one of the top priorities for delegates this week. “For example, Senate Bill 52, which allowed local government to put zoning overlays, basically, to ban solar over entire areas and moved it from the state,” he says. “That’s good, we want local control. But it’s bad because we don’t want control over our land.”
He tells Brownfield the tone of the discussions is almost as important as the policy that members set. “To make sure we’re interpreting every move we make to ensure we’re doing what our members are telling us to do,” he says.
