A focus on soil health

A southern Illinois based agronomist says focusing on soil health in the midst of the economic downturn can benefit farmers in the long run.

Nick Frederking with AgriGold tells Brownfield, “We always like to check for CEC and organic matter to understand the holding capacity of our soil and how much mineralization we might be able to expect in that organic matter through the year. When we really get to the nuts and bolts, phosphorus and potassium are often the two big nutrients that we focus on the most.”

He says many farmers are looking at cost saving measures for the 2025 growing season.

“No matter where you decide to trim the input costs, be very conscious of what that means on the back end,” he says. “There’s always the dollars and cents that we look at and where we can cut it off, but we don’t always think about that other side of it and how this is going to affect it throughout the rest of the season.”

Frederking encourages farmers to evaluate their soil fertility to help improve performance for next year.
