A lot of wet fields out there
The weekly Crop Progress Report from the National Ag Statistics Service shows that as of Sunday, 97 percent of the U.S. corn crop has emerged, a 6-point improvement from last week and 2 points ahead of the five-year average. The corn crop is rated 73 percent in good to excellent condition compared to 74 percent a week ago.
Soybean planting is 87 percent complete, an 11-point increase from a week ago but 3 points behind the five-year average. 75 percent of the beans have emerged compared to 64 percent last week and 77 percent for the five-year average. The beans are rated 67 percent good to excellent condition down 2 points from a week ago.
Winter wheat is 96 percent headed, 5 points above a week ago and 7 points ahead of the five-year average. 11 percent of the crop has been harvested compared to 4 percent a week ago and 20 percent normally done by now. The crop is rated 35 percent fair, 43 percent good to excellent condition which is a slight improvement over a week ago. Spring wheat is 70 percent good to excellent condition, a 1-point improvement from a week ago.
Pastures and ranges are rated 65 percent good to excellent condition up 3 points from a week ago. California pastures are 30 percent fair and 35 percent poor to very poor. The Golden State’s topsoil moisture is 30 percent short and 55 percent very short. On the other end of the spectrum, Missouri topsoil is 55 percent surplus, Michigan topsoil is 53 percent surplus.
