A soybean harvest reflection

A farmer in west-central Missouri says it was a faster harvest than usual.

“We’ve never had a stoppage during soybean harvest, which I think was the first for my career. Dry was the norm.”

Garrett Riekhof tells Brownfield he wrapped up soybean harvest mid-October and it was better than expected with yields ranging from the upper 40 bushels/acre to 85 bushels/acre.

“I don’t think the variability in my ground is indicative of the yield differential we had this year. So much of it was the maturity group of bean, which ranged from a 33 to a 46 and definitely, the later maturity was worse yielding and that correlated with planting dates.”

Riekhof says he has plenty of storage for the soybeans and in early harvest, he took advantage of harvest premiums in Kansas City to move the crop. He says that marketing strategy was a good decision.

USDA says soybean harvest is more than 60% complete in Missouri.
