A variable harvest across Corn Belt
Harvest is variable across portions of the Corn Belt, with many farmers noting the dry conditions.
“We’ve had to irrigate a lot. We were pretty dry mid-season.”
But Nebraska farmer Mark McHargue says he’s expecting a good popcorn harvest this year. Kansas farmer Joe Newland says the drought has brought variability back to corn and soybeans.
“It’s not going to be much more than crop insurance on soybeans again this year.”
Central Iowa farmer Brian Feldpausch says he’s just starting soybean harvest this week.
“It will probably be the end of the week before soybean harvest is moving full throttle in central Iowa. There are soybeans coming out, but they were the early maturing varieties planted in early April.”
Garrett Hawkins from Missouri says harvest is moving quickly in portions of the state and weekend rains has likely alleviated some of the dryness that’s been building over the past few weeks.
All four farmers are leaders at their state Farm Bureaus and met in northwest Missouri over the weekend to discuss crops and common issues, including private property rights.
