A vision for a food and water secure world
A leader with a Nebraska-based institute says they have a vision for a food and water secure world.
Peter McCornick, executive director of the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska, says it’s critical to improve water management in ag and food systems.
“The main challenge is how do we produce enough food to feed the world and at the same time, not wreck our water resources particularly, but that also applies to soils and other natural resources.”
He tells Brownfield the challenge is finding solutions that are successful in different landscapes around the world.
“What we really look at is what has worked and what hasn’t worked in that community. But then how do we package this together that both consider the inputs but also the social situation and the cultural situation so that it’s fit for purpose for that market.”
McCornick says the institute will continue research efforts that can help develop effective techniques to sustainably manage water and increase food security.
