Active weather patterns bring swift changes in conditions

Michigan’s climatologist says the state could be the dividing line in the Midwest between wet and dry conditions at the beginning of June.

Jeff Andresen says the current warmup should cause a rapid change in soil moisture levels across the Great Lakes.

“This should be a major opportunity for most people to get back if they’ve been out because of last week’s cold, wet weather,” he says. “This will definitely make a difference.”

Andresen says a strong weather system mid-week will bring precipitation to the Plains and eastward.

“Michigan, somewhat in between an area projected to be drier than normal to our east and then one somewhat wetter than normal to our West,” he says.

But, he says weather models into mid-June have unusually high levels of disagreement for the coming weeks, which likely means yet another shift in conditions ahead.

Andresen gave his outlook during the recent Michigan State University Extension Field Crop Virtual Breakfast.
