Addressing privacy concerns with big data
On Friday the Climate Corporation unveiled a number of new principles and commitments regarding data use and privacy. David Friedberg, CEO of The Climate Corporation says while the information collected from farmers can be extremely beneficial – there is concern about how the data will be used and the privacy and control of the data collected on their land.
Friedberg says he hopes the guidelines announced will support the technology revolution in agriculture. “Our goal is to immediately and transparently address farmers concerns about data and privacy while driving forward the conversation about industry standards that support farmers’ needs,” he says.
He says the goal of the Guiding Principles on Data and Privacy is to put those concerns at ease. “We state very clearly that farmers own the data they create or provide to us,” he says. “The Climate Corporation will make it easy for farmers to control who can access the data they provide and for what purpose. We will enable farmers to easily remove that data from our system.”
In addition, Friedberg says Climate Corp will provide basic data service for farmers, free of charge so they can easily create, store, and access their data. And because having easy access their data is also important, the company says they will also ensure farmers can share their data across multiple platforms at no cost.
