Addressing weeds on prevent plant acres

Prevent plant acres are record high this year and a technical service representative with FMC says the company is helping farmers manage those acres.

Nick Hustedde says managing weeds before they go to seed is important. And he says if it’s past that point, tilling the field and planting a cover crop can help.

“One thing we really have to focus on is effective weed management and setting a stage for success in 2020, particularly on those prevent plant fields,” he says.

Speaking to Brownfield at the Farm Progress Show, Hustedde says they are also seeing some disease pressure.

“As we think about this year, disease pressure was somewhat low because it was dry, but now we’ve had some rain and so I think we’ll see some of that pickup,” he says. “For those folks that did apply a fungicide, it will be important to watch those fields, scout them, and determine the benefit in that regard.”

Hustedde covers Indiana and Illinois for FMC.
