AEB unveils First Lady’s Commemorative Egg, hunger relief pledge
The American Egg Board has unveiled the 2021 First Lady’s Commemorative Egg, a gift to Dr. Jill Biden and an Easter tradition on behalf of U.S. egg farmers.
President and CEO Emily Metz describes it as a beautiful egg with an image of the White House surrounded by flowering cherry blossoms.
“With those cherry blossoms blooming it’s the symbol of hope, spring, and renewal and I think that’s a message we all need right now as we’re still trying to grapple with this pandemic, start fresh, and hopefully have a better year this year,” she says.
For more than 40 years, U.S. egg farmers have been working to find a way to commemorate the Easter holiday, where egg is a staple. The American Egg Board works with artists to craft a unique egg and present it to the First Lady. Artist Russ Hagen designed this year’s egg.
In addition to the announcement, Metz tells Brownfield U.S. egg farmers are committing to donate more than 90 million eggs to families in need.
“We recognize that food insecurity and hunger are on the rise,” she says. “Eggs are routinely one of the most sought after, donated items at food banks and we want to make sure everyone who wants access to this perfect protein is able to get access to it.”
U.S. egg farmers donate product to food banks and their communities each year. Last year, farmers donated more than 46 million eggs.
