AFBF pushes back IFB expulsion
The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) won’t terminate Illinois Farm Bureau’s (IFB) membership on December 20th as originally planned.
AFBF’s Board of Directors have approved an amended resolution that would instead end IFB’s membership effective 30 days after conclusion of the pending litigation between the two groups.
In a statement to Brownfield, IFB president Brian Duncan says the organization is pleased by AFBF’s decision, and IFB remains confident in its strong legal position. He says the move is a “positive step forward” in IFB’s pursuit to remain a member of AFBF.
AFBF is seeking to expel IFB in response to a decision by COUNTRY Financial, an affiliate of IFB, to no longer require its Illinois-based insurance clients purchasing non-farm policies to hold farm bureau memberships effective Jan. 1. IFB filed a motion for a preliminary injunction November 21st to allow IFB and its county Farm Bureaus to continue using the Farm Bureau name while the lawsuit proceeds.
A hearing in the dispute is scheduled for next week, but IFB says that’s now unlikely given AFBF’s recent decision.
