Ag awaits Supreme Court opinion on Trump tariffs

The U.S. Supreme Court still hasn’t issued a decision on President Trump’s use of tariffs and ag lobbyist says he’s eager to see the opinion.

Randy Russell with the Russell Group says if the court upholds the authority, tariffs will continue, but if the court strikes it down “I think you’ll see the administration use other trade authorities to envoke tariffs. It may be a little more clumsy or laborous and time consuming, but I wouldn’t anticipate, even if the court strikes down the tariffs, some huge change out of the chute on tariffs.”

Russell tells Brownfield the court’s ruling directly affects U.S. tariff policy, which has a ripple effect on trade, ag and the economy.

The agriculture industry has been expecting a ruling from SCOTUS for weeks and Russell says the delay feels long, because of the decision’s importance and political weight.
