Ag Committee member pleased with House farm bill

A House Ag Committee member says he’s pleased with its version of the farm bill.

Wisconsin’s 8th District Republican Tony Weid says, “I feel like we are actually putting the farm back in the farm bill.”

Weid tells Brownfield the House bill contains two important food security provisions helping SNAP recipients. “I was able to add an amendment that allows for those people to buy yogurt and hard cheeses with the SNAP dollars. It incentivizes them. It would be similar to a buy-one-get-one-free. In other words, we want people to eat nutritious food, and dairy is very nutritious.”

Weid says another provision included in the bill would permanently remove EBT card processing fees, helping both small businesses and SNAP recipients. “It’s important really to keep costs down, and also to incentivize retailers to offer SNAP so that people can get their nutrition and not have to travel too far, so it really takes away the fees for the retailer.”

Weid says eliminating the Senate filibuster rule would likely help advance the farm bill sooner, but he’s optimistic it will get to the President’s desk.
