Ag economist: USMCA review could shape North American farm trade
An ag economist with the Ohio State University says U.S. agriculture should be paying close attention to the review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
Ian Sheldon tells Brownfield “Mexico’s our number one agricultural export market and Canada’s number two.”
Sheldon says he’s concerned about recent actions that conflict with the spirit of the USMCA, initiated by the U.S., and how that could impact the review.
“It’s a little bit puzzling why the United States has reimposed anti-dumping duties against the import of tomatoes from Mexico and the U.S. currently has an anti-dumping investigation into mushroom imports from Canada and winter strawberries from Mexico.”
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is expected to meet with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City this week, ahead of the July 1 mandatory review date of the USMCA.
