Ag Economy Barometer survey shows sentiment gap between livestock and crop producers

According to the latest Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer, there’s a sentiment gap between crop and livestock producers.

But, Michael Langemeier, the director of Purdue’s Center for Commercial Agriculture, tells Brownfield, “There’s still concerns about input costs in the short run. If you look longer term, cost control, financial considerations, and margins particularly for crop producers are a concern.”

He says policy uncertainty has producers from both sectors hesitant to plan for the future.

“It’s related to geopolitical risk associated with the wars in Ukraine and Iran,” he says. That makes the future look a little less clear.”

Langemeier says survey respondents want additional risk management tools to help survive the current economic downturn.

The Barometer is a nationwide measure of the health of the U.S. agricultural economy and surveys 400 agricultural producers on economic sentiment each month.
