An ag lending expert says early financial planning could help farmers be better positioned heading into 2026.

Bob Siegel, regional vice president of agricultural lending at Farm Credit Mid-America, says farmers should keep a close eye on their balance sheets.

“Having accurate data is a foundation for great decision making in these types of environments,” he says. “It helps farmers and producers to see the full picture of their economic situation, including profit margins, working capital, and total net worth to build a plan to be proactive for the future.”

He tells Brownfield building a strong network of advisors can help producers with risk management strategies.

“Their agricultural lender definitely needs to have a seat at that table,” he says. “As challenges exist, it’s really important to be proactive and communicate with your lender and try to be a partner with them as well.”

Siegel says being proactive and planning ahead will be key as margins are expected to stay tight in 2026.
