Ag sector looks to address Minnesota’s deer problem
Minnesota livestock groups are working with the DNR to address deer depredation.
State Cattlemen’s Association president Jake Thompson says deer are eating crops.
“To the point where you have areas, fields that are, APH’s (average production history) are starting to drop just because they haven’t been able to get a yield because of (the deer). You go up by me (in northern Minnesota), it’s more winter time, spring time feed depredation problems.”
Minnesota DNR commissioner Sarah Strommen tells Brownfield there’s no silver bullet solution to the problem.
“We need multiple tools in that toolbox in order to help, whether it is fencing to keep deer out of food storage areas. And then obviously trying to reduce deer densities in areas.”
Strommen says she’d like to improve Minnesota’s deer depredation program.
“It’s kind of waned over the years and it’s really clear we need to build that back up.”
Thompson says the cattlemen’s association is looking to develop a deer depredation working group to come up with ideas.
Brownfield interviewed Strommen and Thompson during Farmfest earlier this month.
