Ag transportation upgrades needed in 2026

The head of the Soy Transportation Coalition says investments in the supply chain are needed in 2026.

Mike Steenhoek tells Brownfield, “When you invest in roads in the U.S., rivers in the U.S., the rail industry, and our ports, the beneficiaries of that are U.S. companies and U.S. agriculture. None of the benefits accrue to our competitors in Brazil, for example, or Argentina.”

He says upgraded ag transportation infrastructure makes the U.S. more competitive.

“When you make these investments in infrastructure, you essentially are removing cents and dollars on the per bushel delivered price to an international customer.”

Steenhoek says locks and dams along the Mississippi River need to prioritized.

“The problem continues to be that with some of these projects, we’re experiencing very significant cost over runs and project delays. There’s a real opportunity to achieve some more efficiency.”

He says the secret to success in the export market is to have an efficient inland waterway system.
