Agronomist expecting near-record corn crop in Illinois
A Midwest agronomist is expecting a near-record corn crop in Illinois this year.
Mike Toohill with AgriSompo tells Brownfield some farmers are concerned about tip back and on-going drought stress in western Illinois but, “Based on what I have been seeing, this corn crop finished amazingly strong. There are very big kernels out there in the fields, very little water damage in Illinois – most of the high ground held on pretty well.”
He says it is a fairly healthy crop too, with minimal disease pressure this season.
“We did not have nearly as much tar spot, southern rust, or grey leaf spot as normal.”
Toohill says despite later planting dates, he anticipates a near-record soybean crop in Illinois as well.
