Agronomist: growers likely to maintain fertility despite higher fertilizer prices

A fertilizer supplier says he is confident about supplies but says higher prices will likely last through the season. Scott Wilburn is a district agronomist with MFA in Northeast Missouri.

“Prices, especially on the phosphates, have definitely gone up, nitrogen as well,” Wilburn told Brownfield At News at the MFA facility in Mexico, Missouri. “I really don’t have a good handle on where that is going to go; generally when we get into this time of the year, we don’t see prices back off a whole lot.”

Even with higher fertilizer prices, Wilburn says producers are interested in maintaining fertility when commodity prices are strong.

“Growers today have a better handle than probably any time in the past, of exactly how much product is taken off out of a field with a big yield,” he said, “and even with higher prices, they don’t want to get too far behind on that.”
