Agronomist: it’s too early to consider switching hybrids

It’s been a slow start to the season for many growers in the Eastern Corn Belt, but an agronomist with Seed Consultants says it’s too soon to worry about switching to earlier maturing hybrids.

“I don’t really start worrying about variety selection until after May 20th and closer to that June timeframe before I worry about whatever my choices were for maturity dates,” he says.

Bill McDonald says if growers are still having issues after May 20th

“After that, I might look at the 115-day hybrid and consider backing that up a little bit, but I don’t get too excited until it gets to be June,” he says.

McDonald urges farmers to be patient and let soils warm up and dry out before completing fieldwork and planting.
