Agronomist says fall is a good time for tillage

An agronomist says as harvest comes to an end, attention shifts to field work.

Kris Young, with AgriGold tells Brownfield…

“We still see some compaction in some growers’ fields, so right now is a great time to get out there and do some deep tillage with dry soils. You’re going to get more fracturing of those soils doing a deep tillage operation this time of year. I think that’s something to consider.”

He says growers should identify and address any yield limiting factors.

“I would suggest growers go out there, dig up corn and soybean plants and see where your roots are stopping. If they’re not getting past that six, eight inch depth that tells me there’s a density layer or compaction layer right there where your tillage implement is going in,” he says.

For farmers planting on lighter soils, Young says farmers should consider a strip till.
