An agronomist says genetic diversity can help crop growers mitigate risk.

Dave Hoy with LG Seeds tells Brownfield, “Some hybrids might be really good with diseases,” he said. “Other ones might be really good with drought stress or standability. Making sure you mix up that genetic diversity really helps get a consistent yield across the whole farm.”

He suggests consulting with an agronomist if multiple risks occur at the same time.

“Your agronomist usually has a really good pulse on when things are moving in,” Hoy said. “If you have three different things moving in, whether it’s two diseases and a pest or maybe it’s a weather event, having your agronomist there in that collaborative fashion gives you an opportunity to be ahead of any problem that’s out there.”

Hoy says consistency should be a grower’s theme for 2026.

“A consistent yield, placement, and communication with your trusted advisor is really going to give you the most success as you go across your farm next year.”

Hoy spoke to Brownfield at the 2025 NAFB Convention in Kansas City.
